Odayil Ninnu by Kesava Dev

P. Kesava Pillai, known by his pen name Kesava Dev, emerged as one of the makers of modern Malayalam fiction when he wrote this novel, whose title can be understood as 'from the gutter', with a rickshaw puller named Pappu as its hero. It was made into a movie with the same name.


Thattakam by Kovilan

Mathrubhoomi (2016 edition)

V. V. Ayyappan, better known by his nom de plume, Kovilan, presents a powerful and poignant portrayal of generations of people in his ancestral hamlet. In the words of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, "the novel unfolds itself through innumerable anecdotes sprouting from legends, oracles, revelations, fantasies and historical events." The title can be understood as 'the terrain'.


Inapravukal by Muttathu Varkey

DC Books (2010 edition)

Best known for a genre of sentiment-filled romantic fiction known as the painkili (janapriya) novel, Varkey tells the tragic love story of Anthony and Rahel in this book. It was also adapted into a film.


Nizhalattam by Kuttikrishna Marar

Marar Sahityaprakasam (1985)

This is a collection of poems and plays by a critic who did not appreciate literary indiscretions.


Govardhante Yathrakal by Anand
Translated as Govardhan's Travels: A Novel

DC Books (2017 edition)

Literally understood as 'the journeys of Govardhanan', this Sahitya Akademi Award winning novel written by P. Sachidanandan under his pseudonym, Anand, was one of his two works that made him an icon in Malayalam literature.
