Written by an author belonging to the first generation of popular novelists in the modern Hindi language, Chandrakanta is an epic fantasy novel about two lovers from warring families. The massive success of this work persuaded Khatri to write a sequel titled Chandrakanta Santati, or 'Chandrakanta’s Progeny'.
Yashodhara by Maithilisharan Gupt

Yashodhara is an epic poem centred around the titular character, Yashodhara, the wife of Gautama Buddha, who was abandoned by Buddha when he left his home in the pursuit of enlightenment.
Vaishali Ki Nagarvadhu by Acharya Chatursen Shastri

The novel, whose title translates to 'The Royal City Courtesan of Vaishali', is a biographical novel that revolves around Ambapali, a celebrated royal courtesan of the Republic of Vaishali in ancient India around 500 BC. The work portrays the lustful nature of society as well as other aspects of culture and history of early Buddhist era India.
Rashmirathi by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar
Translated as Rashmirathi by Leela Gujadhur Sarup

This is an epic poem tracing the life of Karna, the son borne to Kunti, the Pandava's mother, before her marriage in the Mahabharata. It has been adapted for the stage.
Andher Nagari Chaupat Raja by Bharatendu Harishchandra

Harishchandra's masterpiece is a political satire set in, as the title suggests, a 'City of Darkness', ruled by an 'Inane Ruler'. The play has been widely staged by renowned directors across the country.
