Chitralekha by Bhagwati Charan Verma

Rajkamal Prakashan (1934)

Written while the author was still practicing law, this historical novel established his presence in the literary sphere overnight. Woven around an intense love story that reflects on and flashes out not just the various aspects of human nature but also the myriad dilemmas faced by us in our lifetime, it reflects on themes such as love, sin and virtue. It was adapted into a film twice.


Kamayani by Jaishankar Prasad

Rajpal Publishing (2014 edition)

Considered to signify the the epitome of Chhayavadi school of Hindi poetry, Kamayani is an epic poem (Mahakavya). It depicts the interplay of human emotions, thoughts, and actions by taking mythological metaphors. The work has been adapted for the stage.


Chidambara by Sumitranandan Pant 

Rajkamal Prakashan (2017 edition)

Pant became the first Hindi poet to receive the Jnanpith Award with this collection of poems. It represents his pursuit of true humanism which is much needed in the contemporary world.


Amrit Aur Vish by Amritlal Nagar

Rajkamal Prakashan (2016 edition)

Set in the post-independence era, this hefty novel follows a sixty year old award-winning writer as he works on his latest book about two students and their ideologies. Gradually, the line between reality and fiction blurs, and Indian society is revealed in all its colours. It won the Sahitya Akademi Award as well as the Soviet Land Nehru Award, and has been translated into Russian apart from many Indian languages.


Anamdas Ka Potha by Hazari Prasad Dwivedi

Rajkamal Prakashan (2010 edition)

Written by a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, this historical novel is also a love story.
