Considered to be Debi's magnum opus, the novel follows Satyabati, a girl who is married off at the tender age of eight, and goes on to fight against familial violence and social prejudices.


Pagla Dashu by Sukumar Roy

Parul Prakashan (2012 edition)

One of the many characters created by Roy, all of whom were a result of, as he himself put it, kheyal ros, or whims and fancies. Dashu, or Dasharathi, is a schoolboy who enjoys pranking boastful characters.


Aranyer Adhikar by Mahasweta Devi

(1977)

Devi, who was a fiery advocate for the rights of adivasis, follows the life and struggle of Birsa Munda, the tribal freedom fighter, in this novel.
