The novel centres itself around Kuber, a man who hails from a poor community of fishermen residing in a fictitious village by the banks of the Padma River. It has been widely translated and adapted into a film.


Ganadevata by Tarashankar Bandopadhyay

This novel depicts the poverty-stricken life of rural Bengal and the ignorance that hinders their progress. The title translates to people as god.

The novel follows the Roy family and their tales of loss in rural Bengal, and later, Varanasi. The film adaptation by Satyajit Ray has made a name for itself as well.


Anandibai Ityadi Galpa by Parashuram

Considered the greatest Bengali humorist of the twentieth century, this Sahitya Akademi Award winning collection of Rajshekhar Basu's contains fifteen satirical short stories about love, family, and politics.


Ghanada Samagra by Premendra Mitra
Translated as Mosquito and Other Stories by Amlan

Penguin Books (2013 edition)

Known for creating the character, Ghana da, or elder brother Ghana, Mitra published three collections of short stories chronicling Ghana da's other-worldly adventures.
